Husker Postmortem

With this new update, the content of Husker is complete. There's going to be some bug fixes I deal with, and there's plenty that i'm not satisfied with, but it is a very special project and it is done.

Husker originated as a small test project I started after I got stuck working on a Monster Hunter RPG. You see, in my Monster Hunter fan game, I got to a point where I needed to start making custom tilesets but the whole idea was overwhelming. I thought I would tackle that challenge in a separate project with a tiny scope, in fact, I was going to make the game a visual novel and the game's files for Husker are still labelled "Visual Novel" on my pc to this day.

Making custom tiles was easier than I thought it would be and my intention quickly changed from visual novel to a yume nikki fangame. I had recently played yume nikki and I understood that I could carelessly create content then stitch it all together for a surreal exploration experience. I did not understand at the time what made yume nikki so special but with this update i believe i found Husker's unique voice, so no matter. I very quickly had ideas for an overarching story and soon Husker became my freshman indie dev project.

Though I have learned a lot from adding whatever I think of to the game, I think i've about exhausted what I can learn from working on it and it's about time I apply my mind to something that can challenge me again. Husker is a flawed project since it was built on sticks by a guy who didn't know that writing was a fundamental creative skill that needed a lot of practice to be good at.

I've said this multiple times in my dev logs, but I'm a firm believer that creatives should scope low and create and finish small projects as frequently as they can instead of working on a long secret project. That being said, I have worked on Husker for just under a full year (Since August 7th 2024). There is plenty i would still change if Husker was my magnus opus, but it isn't and so i'm leaving the quirks in and moving on.

Thank you SO DEEPLY if you read any of this, whether you've played Husker or not (though I'd much prefer it if you did). It's time for the next project... and it... won't be that monster hunter rpg... i think that was for nothing.
